TEXAS

Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge

Managed by the Texas Chenier Plain NWR Complex. 509 Washington Ave. (P.O. Box 278), Anahuac, TX 77514; (409) 267-3337; http://refuges.fws.gov/profiles/index.cfm?id=21521. Office hours, 7:30 am-4:00 pm, Monday-Friday. Refuge is open 24 hours per day. Nearest community is Anahuac. Nearest highway is Hwy. 124. The refuge offers excellent saltwater and freshwater angling and crabbing opportunities. Six miles of shoreline along East Galveston Bay are accessible by boat or wade fishing. Predominant saltwater fish species include red drum, flounder and spotted seatrout. The East Bay Bayou Tract offers freshwater fishing opportunities from 3 bank piers and an accessible bridge. Freshwater species include catfish, white bass and gar. Two boat ramps provide access to East Bay and Oyster Bayou. Boating is not permitted in inland waters.

Aransas and Matagorda Island National Wildlife Refuges

Managed as units of the Aransas NWR Complex, P.O. Box 100, Austwell, TX, 77950; (361) 286-3559;http://refuges.fws.gov/profiles/index.cfm?id=21532. Visitor center hours, 8:30 am-4:30 pm, daily. The refuges are open daily from sunrise to sunset. Nearest highway is FM 2040. Nearest community is Austwell. Wade fishing access from the Aransas Unit to San Antonio Bay is permitted April 15-October 15, daylight hours only. Four wade fishing access points are available: picnic area, Bay Overlook, Dagger Point, and the observation tower areas. Fishing is available in surrounding bays by boat only. The refuges have no public boat ramp facilities. Launch sites are available in Rockport, Austwell and Port O'Connor. Matagorda Island NWR offers year-round fishing. Access is by boat or Texas Parks & Wildlife passenger ferry to the overlay Matagorda Island State Park on the north end. Boat docks are available for private boats at the north end. Visitors can wade fish in the surf or in the bayside marshes. Local bays offer excellent opportunities for bait casting, lure fishing and fly-fishing. Common game species include red drum, black drum, speckled trout and flounder.

Bahia Grande Unit

Open to public use only at San Martin Lake. Public boat ramp is available; wade and bank fishing are allowed only along the perimeter of the lake. Fishing season is year-round. Saltwater species include spotted sea trout and red drum.

Big Boggy National Wildlife Refuge

Boat-accessed fishing is permitted in bays/estuaries and Intracoastal Waterway. Fishing on the refuge is open year-round, sunrise to sunset. Saltwater species include spotted sea trout, flounder and red drum.

Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge

Nearest highway is Hwy. 2004. Saltwater fishing on the refuge is permitted year-round from sunrise to sunset. Boat-accessed fishing is permitted on Nicks Lake, Salt Lake, Lost Lake, bays and bayous. Access for bank fishing is permitted at Bastrop Bayou, Clay Banks and Salt Lake public fishing areas. The Clay Banks Area offers bank fishing along a 1-mile segment of Bastrop Bayou. A non-motorized boat launch is available at Salt Lake. Available saltwater species include spotted trout, red drum, croaker, sheepshead, flounder and blue crab.

Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge

Nearest main highways include U.S. Hwys. 75 and 82 and FM 1417. The nearest communities include Sherman, Denison and Pottsboro. Refuge waters include 466 acres of various ponds and 2,640 acres on the Big Mineral Arm of Lake Texoma. Available species include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, striped bass, white bass, crappie, sunfish and catfish. Fishing is permitted year-round. Fishing is not permitted from bridges. Boating is permitted April 1-September 30.

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

Laguna Atascosa Unit

Although the refuge does not have ownership of surface waters, the Arroyo Colorado and Laguna Madre are accessible at Adolph Thomae Jr. County Park, (956) 748-2044. Bank and pier fishing, public boat ramps and camping are available within the park. Fishing season is year-round. Saltwater species include spotted sea trout, flounder and red drum.

McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge

Primitive access roads. Nearest main highway is Hwy. 87. Nearest community is Sabine Pass. Refuge waters include Star Lake (400 acres), Clam Lake (2,000 acres), 5-Mile Cut and 10-Mile Cut and access to the Gulf of Mexico. Fishing season is year-round. Available species include black drum, flounder, red drum and blue crab.

San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge

Fishing on the refuge is permitted year-round, sunrise to sunset. Boat-accessed fishing is permitted in bays/estuaries, the Intracoastal Waterway, Cedar Lake, Cow Trap Lake and Cedar Lake Creek, which are designated by refuge signs. Refuge waters include bay estuary and access to ocean. A boat ramp and bank fishing are available at the Cedar Lake Creek Public Fishing Area. Saltwater species include spotted seatrout, flounder, red drum and blue crab.

South Padre Island Unit

Vehicle access for surf fishing, swimming and camping is available on the gulf-side beachfront from the City of South Padre Island north to the Mansfield Cut, including sections of refuge property. Fishing season is year-round. Saltwater species include spotted sea trout, flounder and red drum.

Texas Point National Wildlife Refuge

Fishing season is year-round. Saltwater species include spotted sea trout, flounder and red drum. Boat launching facilities are nearby.

Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge

1351 N. Main, Liberty, TX 77575; (936) 336-9786; http://refuges.fws.gov/profiles/index.cfm?id=21593. Office hours, 8:00 am-4:30 pm, Monday- Friday. Refuge is open sunrise to sunset. Nearest community is Liberty. Nearest highway is Hwy. 90. Champion Lake is the refuge's largest and most popular year-round fishing spot. The most common species are largemouth bass, catfish, crappie and blue crab. Fishing by boat (10 hp motor or less) is allowed from a 150-foot pier or along a 3/4-mile-long levee. No fish, crawfish or crab traps or nets allowed (except a dip net) in recreational fishing areas. There are no facilities.
